More than just a day on the course, the event stands as a testament to resilience, recovery, and the life-changing impact of new beginnings.

A former NBA #1 Draft Pick, Player, and Coach, Lucas has spent the last four decades transforming his own journey of recovery into a mission to help others by guiding thousands of individuals—athletes and non-athletes alike—toward sobriety, purpose, and renewed lives.

“This isn’t just about me—it’s about what’s possible,” Lucas said. “Forty years ago on March 14th, I got a second chance. This event is about making sure others get theirs. Second, third, fourth, as many as it takes.”

The John Lucas Golf Classic has become a cornerstone Houston event, drawing former and current professional athletes, coaches, business leaders, and community partners. Proceeds support recovery and prevention programming, mentorship initiatives, and youth development efforts.

Why it matters:

· Mental health crisis affects millions of young athletes, with nearly 1 in 5 reporting serious mental health challenges. The biggest barrier to treatment is a sport culture that discourages asking for help, increased performance pressure, and lack of access to trusted mentors who understand these challenges.

· Lucas is widely regarded as a pioneer in athlete recovery and mentorship.

· The event combines sports, philanthropy, and public health advocacy in one of Houston’s most established charitable tournaments.
